NEW COMMUNIQUE FROM THE ALIEN
Well...here it is.....3 months in to 2010 and no updates for a very long time...
excuses ? there are none...other than to say "life has a way of getting in the way"...
That's it in a nutshell actually.....being busy with a variety of things made it virtually impossible to continue with the blog.
But..rest assured, the PASSION for the music is still as strong as it ever was, new discoveries every day, the world is full of cool music "outside" of the comercial MUCK masquerading as Music.....
I've been busy selling off some of my "gems" , both on ebay (seller name : deutschnepal) and recently on DISCOGS (seller name : wolfcity)
Most of the "proceeds" from those sales are converted to replacing the originals with cool digipack/mini sleeve reissues, especially those great japanese Box sets...
one of the sellers with a variety of such sets is ZENARCHER, who has a ebay store and brings in some great and rare items from Japan's DISK UNION.....
Also, the great CONRAD SCHNITZLER and co-hort WOLFGANG SEIDEL have just released a VERY limited 10 cd box set called 10kw/h, available from RICOCHETDREAMS.com
hurry, there are only 150 available world wide....
The NEU! vinyl box set is also imminent, due out in May. Michael Rother is also currently touring with a band reprising the spirit of the original band...
Magma released a new album last year as part of the Theus Hamtaak trilogy and Christian Vander has anounced a follow up allready.....
In Germany, bands like Color Haze and Dave Schmidt's various groups keep the psychedelic scene in high gear, they will warrant a few pages of their own....in the meantime, check out the SULATRON website and prepare to be blown away.....
So.....there is material galore to explore and convey to you...i shall try and keep up with as much as i can.....stay tuned !

SIGNS OF LIFE........I'm BACK !!
Happy New Year !
Man...i can not believe how busy and eventfull 2006 has been for me....in so many ways.
So first, let me apologize for not updating the Blog....i was busy with a move to a new Home and had no time at all...
Good news is, there are TONS of fantastic re-issues of Kraut & Psych & Space and other cool music, so 2007 promises to be a banner year.
I will post MANY new links to buy music from, including myself, as i'm in the process of downsizing my LP collection and replacing the good stuff with CD's.....most with Bonus tracks.....
Anyway, i should have more time in the new year to do regular posts, i'm certain you will enjoy !
a good start to explore new music and spend lots of money would be :
www.green-brain-krautrock.de
and look for my e-bay auctions under the name deutschnepal, you just may find the "long lost" original youv'e been looking for for so long....
cheers, best to you all,
Peter

HERE THEY ARE.......
the latest batch.......IRRLICHT, LIVE IN POLAND, ARE YOU SEQUENCED? & another disc from the deleted "CONTEMPORARY WORKS" Volume 1
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
The New Klaus Schulze release's are imminent....
The next batch of Klaus releases are just out, as will be the next 3 Guru Guru's and at least 2 of the Amon Duul 2 catalogue, although some may be delayed.
The current interest in so called "Krautrock" is amazing !
The German WDR TV Network just finished running a 6 part TV series entitled "Kraut & Rueben", which is by far the BEST DOCUMENTARY on Rock in Germany i have ever seen and most likely was a surprise to many germans as well.....as we all know, most of our Krautrock heroes were and still are better known outside Germany than in their Homeland....
I certainly hope that this series will come out on DVD soon, even if it is in german, it's going to be a "must have " for any collector !

2 of my ALL TIME FAVOURITES.....AMON DÜÜL 2
Hot on the heels of the last 5 Popol Vuh reissues come four of AMON DÜÜL 2 best releases ever, soon to be followd by more from GURU GURU. (hopefully their early OHR gems will see a "proper" reissue soon as well....)
Also out now are the first of a whole slew from YELLO co-founder CARLOS PERON, which are excellent and have escaped many on this side of the continent when they first were released.
Holger Czukay's back catalogue will also get the same treatment soon and Klaus Schulze's next 4 are on the way as well.....
There seems to be a huge resurgence of the genre, with long lost gems like ODIN, SAND, WEED, GERMAN OAK and others coming out as well.
For the novice to the genre, a great 6 CD set has just been released in Germany for a budget price, called KRAUTROCK "music for your brain" It covers a great deal and doesn't just merely scratch the surface, so it's a good "beginners" set....

The double and LIVE "Das Wagner Desaster" now has an expanded Disc 2 with "encore sevilla" added as a Bonus. Rounding out this batch of re-releases is the fairly new re-issue of VANITY OF SOUNDS on Klaus's RAINHORSE records from 2000.

More reissues are planned for 2006, certain are the last four or 5 POPOL VUH's including the seminal "sei still, wisse ich bin", more Guru Guru....( i'm hoping for the long deleted OFFICIAL releases of DANCE OF THE FLAMES, DON'T CALL US WE'LL CALL YOU and several of the yet to be released Brain label releases. Down the road we may still see MORE re-issues from AMON DÜÜL 2.....
In the meantime, enjoy the above new Klaus and Kraan Discs and treat zourself to a couple of FANTASTIC DVD'S while your'e at it....
A new label in Germany called KRAUTROCK CLASSICS has just released 2 great DVD's..the long lost and great EMBRYO Documentary "Vagabunden Karawane", chronicling their 1970/72 era "Reise" ( Journey) through Iran , Afghanistan, Pakistan and India......SUPER COOL and a "mist have " for any Krautrock Fan.
The second one in the series is BIRTH CONTROL "History" , which features a complete Concert from 1996 but more importantly, lot's of videos from gigs in the late 60ties and early seventies.

Guru Guru "Lounge" and "Mani und seine Freunde" are out NOW !
A " Must have" for every fan of Krautrock.....
The new album, "in the Guru Lounge" perfectly straddles pop, rock, trance and jazz.
Yet the album flows and everything fits, regardless of "genre changes"
The re-release of Mani's first "solo" album, is a delight ! A collaboration between Mani and members of Kraan & Cluster, this long awaited gem is a perfect example of how exiting and new this music was at the time and still stands the test of time......
Coming soon is the re-release of MOSHI MOSHI, with a re-worked version of the classic anthem " DER ELEKTRO LURCH" as a welcome Bonus track.
Available wherever good music is sold to people with discriminating and adventerous tastes.

HOELDERLIN
A few months ago, an old friend sent me an email after many years....
It was Christian von Grumbkow, formerly of the much "underated" Prog/Folk band Hoelderlin. I had reviewed their seminal "Traumstadt" double live LP in EUROCK Magazine and played their Music on ALIEN SOUNDTRACKS.....
It was such a pleasure to hear from Christian so unexpectedly...he was very exited to tell me that although he was no longer in the band, EMI Germany had seen fit to re-release TRAUMSTADT on CD....(it had seen a re-release earlier, along with their other albums, but i'm not sure if these were "official" or not) In either case, it was nice to see a "major" label take an interest in a back catalogue that did not then or likely will not ever set any Sales Records.
It was released in February of 2005 and should be freely available, at least in Germany....( Christian's efforts to have the label send me a copy have been unsuccessful, but that's ok.....i have the original and perhaps i will reprint my "original review" as well)
The good news is that this release has sparked a re-union of sorts with some of the original members and guest musicians....( Christian will not play guitar and unfortunately, his brother died in 1990)
The "new" HOELDERLIN will be part of a new KRAUTROCK re-union DVD, to be recorded in December this year, featuring KRAAN, KIN PING MEH, 2066 and THEN, BROESELMASCHINE & RUFUS ZUPHALL.
( i'm not sure if this one will be available via SPV as well, but as soon as i find out i will let you all know)
Christian, who was always an accomplished painter as well, is busy touring the the US and Germany, giving talks on ART & THERAPY and painting....check out his excellent work at this gallery : http://www.78thstreetgallery.com

KRAUTROCK IS ALIVE AND WELL........
......IN VANCOUVER, B>C ??????
yup, i ain't kiddin'.....Krautrock influenced psychedelia is alive and well right here under our noses.....it's called BLACK MOUNTAIN !
I just finally got a hold of their selftitled debut CD, recorded in 2004 and released in January 2005. They have several cool side projects as well, PINK MOUNTAIN TOPS and BLACK MOUNTAIN ARMY.
This album contains 8 incredible tracks that are all original material and run the gamut of psyche styles. The opening track, a wild ditty called "Modern Music", instantly recalls Captain Beefheart, while the next 2, "Don't run our hearts around" and "Druganaut" will take you to realms of Can, Amon Düül 2 and even early Jane in spots. "No satisfaction" follows, very nice track, perhaps the best early ROXY MUSIC sounding piece next to the original... Man, that track is worth the whole album....no..wait....what's this i hear ?? Strains of NEU & Harmonia ??? you betcha.... 2 great sounding piece called "set us free" and "No Hits"
By now i'm sold......on comes a super gloomy/melancholy ballad "Heart of Snow"followed by the closer, another cool Roxy/Neu! sounding tune called "faulty times" Great stuff, must be heard by all Fans of Alien Soundtracks.....

EULOGY FOR NEW ORLEANS
this is an excerpt from Bob Dylan's Chronicles 1......how poignant and apropo....
"The first thing you notice about New Orleans are the burying
grounds-the cemeteries-and they're a cold proposition, one of the best
things there are here. Going by, you try to beas quiet as possible,
better to let them sleep. Greek, Roman sepulchres-palatial mausoleums
made to order, phantomesque, signs and symbols of hidden decay-ghosts
of women and men who have sinned and who've died and are now living in
tombs. The past doesn't pass away so quickly here. You could be dead
for a long time. The ghosts race towards the light, you can almost hear
the heavy breathing-spirits, all determined to get somewhere, New
Orleans, unlike a lot of those places you back to and that don't have
the magic anymore, still has got it. Night can swallow you up, yet none
of it touches you. Around any corner, there's a promise of something
daring and ideal and things are just getting going. There's something
obscenely joyful behind every door, either that or somebody crying with
their head in their hands. A lazy rhythm looms in the dreamy air and
the atmosphere pulsates with bygone duels, past-life romance, comrades
requesting comrades to aid them in some way. You can't see it, but you
know it's here. Someone is always sinking. Everyone seems to be from
some very old Southern families. either that or a foreigner. I like the
way it is.
There are lots of places I like, but I like New Orleans better.
There's a thousand different angles at any moment. At any time you
could run into a ritual honoring some vaguely known queen. Bluebloods,
titled persons like crazy drunks, lean weakly against the walls and
drag themselves through the gutter. Even they seem to have insights you
might want to listen to. No action seems inappropriate here. The city
is one very long poem. Gardens full of pansies, pink petunias, opiates.
Flower bedecked shrines, white myrtles, bougainvillea, and purple
oleander stimulate your senses, make you feel cool and clear inside.
Everything in New Orleans is a good idea. Bijou Temple-type cottages
and lyric cathedrals side by side. Houses and mansions, structures of
wild grace. Italianate, Gothic, Romanesque, Greek revival standing in a
lomg line in the rain. Roman Catholic art. Sweeping front porches,
turrets, cast-iron balconies, colonnades-thirty-foot columns,
gloriously beautiful-double pitched roofs, all the architecture of the
whole wide world and it doesn't move. All that and a town square where
public executions took place. In New Orleans you could almost see other
dimentions. There's onlyone day at a time hereand it's tonight and then
tomorrow will be today again. Chronic melancholia hanging from the
trees. You never get tired of it. After a while you start to feel like
a ghost from one of the tombs, like you're in a wax museum below crimson
clouds. Stat empire. Wealthy empire. One of Napoleon's generals,
Lallemand, was said to have come here to check it out, looking for a
place to for his commander to seek refuge after Waterloo. He scouted
around and left, said that here the devil is damned, just like
everybody else, only worse. The devil comes here and sighs. New
Orleans. Exquisite, old fashioned. A great place to live vicariously.
Nothing makes any difference and you never feel hurt, a great place to
really hit on things. Somebody puts something in front of you here and
you might as well drink it. Great place to be intimate or do nothing. A
place to come and hope you'll get smart-to feed pigeons looking for
handouts. A great place to record. It has to be-or so I thought.

And then here's the "other side of the coin".....
apparently.......this is also attributed to Plato and perhaps is eerily reminiscant of what we experience today...
" any musical innovation is full of danger to the whole state, and ought to be prohibited "
" any musical innovation is full of danger to the whole state, and ought to be prohibited "
Well..here's another quote....
This one came from PLATO...commenting on the subject of Music..
"Music is Moral Law. It gives Soul to the Universe, Wings to the mind, flight to the Imagination.
.....It is essence of Order and leads to all that is good, true and beautiful"
you gotta dig it.......

Remasters can be good...
I just finished listening to the remastered versions of Can's Future Days, Unlimited Edition, Landed and Soon Over Babaluma.(thanks Hansi!!) Boy, they sound goooood. It's like listening to them for the first time all over again. Also the CD edition of Neu!'s first, listening to Hallogallo reminded me that it was that song that Peter was playing on Alien Soundtracks one day in 1990 or so, which prompted me to phone the station and the rest is history. (I had a vinyl copy of Neu! '75 which I bought at Tower Records in Buenos Aires of all places, and loved it.)

Krautrock Meeting 2005 DVD
It's finally available here in NTSC Format......
The DVD of some of the legendary Kraut Rockers re-uniting for the german Rock Palast TV show.....
The DVD gives a hint of how great they must have been in their heyday, but overall does not dissapoint. The standout performance in my opinion is the GURU GURU....this band still fronted ( or pushed from behind his drum kit ) by Mani Neumeier, is full of vitality and drive...and, they perform a killer version of "Der Elektrolurch"
Amon Duul 2 are a bit of a dissapointment on the first couple of songs, but all is forgiven by the time they launch in to "DEUTSCH NEPAL"
EPITAPH, JANE, BIRTH CONTROL & KARTHAGO all turn in inspired Rock performances, you can tell they are having Fun after all these years.
There is lot's of Bonus material on this 2 DVD set, over 217 minutes of material, including band biographies and Interviews with Mani & Chris Karrer & others.
Should be available in Canada as an Import via most Music stores or from SPV.de
Not sure if he has it posted yet, but make sure you also visit Archie @ www.eurock.com where you will also find all the Popol Vuh and Klaus Schulze re-issues

Famous ( perhaps infamous) Quotes
Here's a quote one of the people i work with is fond of attaching to his e-mails...
"The Music Business is a cruel and shallow Money trench, a long plastic Hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like Dogs. There's also a negative side."
Hunter S. Thompson (R.I.P.)
BTW...did ya know good 'ol Hunter's last wish was to have his remains blown from a cannon ? It's true....his Friend Johnny Depp ( who played him in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" ) is looking after the arrangements....
I'm going to see Robert Zimmerman @ the Orpheum this Tuesday and the other day i was listening to the great SACD re-issues in the car.....while listening to "It's allright Ma, i'm only bleeding" ( from "Bringing it all back home" ), it occured to me how it has been 40 ( FORTY) years since he first recorded that song and it is as revelant today as it was when he wrote it......have we learned NOTHING ???
"Those to busy being born are busy dieing"......Bob Dylan 1965

New Releases
DAMO SUZUKI'S NETWORK DNW 026/027
"HOLLYARIS"
Damo's latest release from his neverending World Tour !
This time the 2 disc set is the musical travelogue from Hollywood and Paris. Disc one covers the Hollywood show, featuring his "american band" which includes Len del Rio and Tommy Grenas (FARFLUNG, CHROME) and the Paris Cd is his "pick up" band of french musicians..
The neat thing about Damo's travels is he is so eager to play with different musicians from as many countries, in turn it must be a thrill for these guys to play with a CAN Legend....
find out more about Damo and his philosophy and visit his website
SECRET MACHINES CDW 49333
"The Road leads where it's led"
This british outfit makes no secret of who influenced their style.....NEU & Harmonia !...(unlike Tim Gane Of Stereolab who pretended not to be...yeah, like "Jenny ondoline" does not at all sound like NEU! )
This ( to my knowledge ) second outing see's the band cover Dylan (Girl from the North Country) , Van Morrisson's "Astral Weeks", and "money. that's what i want", but the whole disc is worth buying for their INCREDIBLE cover of " IMMER WIEDER" by Harmonia, from the "Deluxe" album. Ultracool !
( i can hear Mariano saying...."where's my copy ??"
find out more about these guys from www.secretmachines.com
Enjoy !

The Universe is unfolding as it should.....
Well, here we are, in Cyberspace, reviving a concept that became a Radio Show for 18 long years on CFRO 102.7 in Vancouver , Canada, called ALIEN SOUNDTRACKS.
Most likely the first show in Canada which in the mid seventies to the late mid nineties brought "non commercial" sounds to the airwaves.
It's first incarnation was actually called "New Music from Europe" and heavily featured the emerging new scene in Germany, France & England, steering away from the then popular "beat music", ie: Blues and Rock and all manner of "schlock" in between....
Peter Moser, ( that would be your's truly) started playing early Tangerine Dream, Can, Neu, Klaus Schulze, Faust, Magma, Heldon, Univers Zero and all manner of progressive and psychedelic stuff like Amon Düül 2, Gong, Hawkwind etc....every saturday night between 7 and 9 pm the airwaves would be filled with strange sounds not found elsewhere on the FM dial.
These were indeed humble beginnings which would lead to newfound Friendships and relationships that endure to this day. So consider this part one of a journey which through music, became a Forum for sharing music and ideas, forging Friendships, helping musicians find a home and an outlet. Perhaps one day Peter, Alex & Mariano will revive the actual show itself, perhaps on line perhaps on the analog or digital airwaves, for now the dialog is open, the links to where we found our music, what we are listening to now is a good start. We may even re-connect with friends who used to send us the music we played or whom we interviewed on the air....quite the number of people over the course of 18 years.
Today a show like ours is not nearly as unique as it was when we started in the mid seventies, but we have been told that we were truly ground breaking in our mix, our presentation and feeling. In a nutshell, we really did not focus on one genre of music, the criteria was more along the lines of bringing in the new stuff we had just aqquired and then "chomping at the bit" to share it with people over the air..you know, the feeling you get when you tell a friend : "you gotta listen to this, man, ultracool...!!
So, consequently, a show could start off spacey and electronic, subtly fuse in to some avant garde stuff, some prog, some folky stuff like Pearls before swine for example or Nick Drake, to Throbbing Gristle and neo chamber music like Univers Zero, to World music and back in to the cosmos again....it was always great to have people calling in to say..: "what the hell is that ???" and of course digging it and wanting more.....none of us got paid for what we did, we just did it for the love of the music and the thrill of sharing it.
Part 2 coming soon.....
best,
Krautrock1 a.k.a Peter
